G20’s Indo-Pacific Focus: Canada Can’t Afford to Miss This Opportunity

With the G20 taking place in New Delhi in early September, we have the chance to focus our attention squarely on the Indo-Pacific market, and India specifically.

Indeed, doing so was our goal as we took part of the B20, the official G20 dialogue forum with the global business community, that also took place in New Delhi..

Our President and CEO Perrin Beatty and EDC’s President and CEO Mairead Lavery recently penned an op-ed that spoke to the importance of participating in this event that had several of our members as part of the delegation.

Diversifying and strengthening Canada’s economic activities in the Indo-Pacific is critical to supporting ongoing free trade negotiations, as well as for securing our participation in major regional initiatives. As a priority market for Canada, India will continue to be a key focus of our engagement in the Indo-Pacific region.

ICYMI - Policy Matters: Our Blueprint for a Stronger Economy

As we all get our head back in “back to school” mode leading up to Labour Day, it’s time to turn our attention to “back to business”.

In our August edition of the Policy Matters Series, we talked about the upcoming Federal Budget and the recommendations the Chamber made as part of the pre-budget consultations.

As the government hunkers down over the priorities leading to its next Budget, it reaches out to various groups representing every sector of the economy to share their insights and recommendations.

These recommendations are shared through Pre-Budget Submissions to the government’s Standing Committee on Finance, and provide an opportunity for sector-specific expertise to shape the next budget.

Our submission and our subsequent Policy Matters focused on what we believe the priorities for the government should be as we head into 2024. It may be a useful (re)read as you get “back to business” and the government returns to Ottawa after summer break.

Alternative Fuels: The Port of Montreal Embarks on an E-Methanol Research Project

Our member, the Port of Montreal, is going the distance to decarbonize shipping.

Earlier this summer, it launched a research project with numerous parties -- over the next two years, the Port and its partners will commit to the shipping industry's energy transition, and will strive to identify, characterize and test optimal blends of e-methanol, a 100% decarbonated alternative fuel, and marine diesel suitable for use by vessels on the St. Lawrence.

Through this bold initiative, Quebec could cut its greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 40,000+ tonnes a year.

Coincidentally, we recently participated in an event with the Port of Montreal, that brought various Canadian Chamber Network members together for a productive work session. The future of the St. Lawrence corridor is also the future of Quebec, Ontario, the Atlantic provinces, and all of Canada.
